Nikon F camera in hand I began my photography journey. With a roll of black and white film loaded, I envisioned being the next Cartier-Bresson. Such lofty sights.
My vision evolved to slide film. Kodachrome, Agfachrome, any chrome. Rich, engaging colors of the medium captivated my picture making. Shadowy painted brick walls, colorful bicycles, downtown and South of Market areas in San Francisco were my photographic landscape.
Film photography is a significant influence in compositional framing, and lighting. The digital medium opened up more possibilities for immediate feedback on creativity, experimentation and storytelling.
The shutter is pressed freezing that image I see in front of me. Creating a single visual element or combination. All images have their story.
I would at times go out and about with my friend and photography buddy. When she died in the early 2000's I put the camera on a closet shelf and did not use a dedicated camera until 2020, though occasional mobile phone camera shots. With the frustrations of being isolated, I felt the need to get out and purchased a Fujifilm X100T; the camera on the shelf went off to a thrift store. I have since moved to a different camera.
I may get back into film photography. No immediate gratification of looking at the LCD screen on back of a camera. Process and wait. I will work on Cartier-Bresson, my way. SjB
